Everything you need to know about NAPPY RASH

NAPPY RASH

Despite all the love and care you have given your baby, she has nappy rash. Taking preventive measures reduces the likelihood of your baby suffering from this condition. But avoiding it altogether is difficult. The truth is, most babies experience nappy rash at any given time.

The type of Nappy Rash  - Ammonia dermatitis

nappy rash

This is the most common form of nappy rash. Raised and red in appearance. It is an irritation caused by ammonia. Fresh urine doesn't irritate your baby's skin but if it sits for too long in his nappy, or on his skin, bacteria from his stools will break it down into ammonia. Ammonia is an irritant, it burns the skin creating the rash. Ammonia dermatitis usually appears before three months of age and is less common in breastfed babies.

The type of Nappy Rash - Friction Rash

This is also quite common form of nappy rash. It is caused by friction when two surfaces rub together. It can appear where the nappy rubs against the skin, this is common in newborn babies. A friction rash can also occur where skin rubs together, naturally, this is more common in babies who are chubby.

The type of Nappy Rash - Thrush (candida albicans)

nappy rash

If your baby's nappy rash persists for more than a couple of days it may need a more active medical treatment. A fungal or bacterial infection may also be present.

The most common fungal infection is Candida albicans, commonly known as thrush or monilia. Around 70% of babies with nappy rash have candida on their skin. It can go completely unnoticed but sometimes has the appearance of white circular scaly lesions. You will need to use an antifungal preparation to treat it. Following the advice in the 'what you can do to help clear and prevent nappy rash' section will also help promote healing. If in doubt, check with your doctor.

What You Can Do to Help Clear and Prevent Nappy Rash

1. Keep Your baby's skin clean and dry

Give your baby a cleansing bath every second day. Clean the nappy area at each nappy change from front to back, not forgetting skin folds. Use non-drying cleansers, such as a soap free bath solution at bath time and a gentle cleansing lotion at nappy change time.

Make sure the products you use are gentle but effective enough to remove the fatty residues while leaving behind important natural oils. Ensure that each products is used sparingly.

2. Reduce Friction

Let your baby go without wearing a nappy for a short time each day. This reduces nappy to skin friction and exposes your baby's bottom to the air. Using a gentle cleansing lotion at nappy change time will help clean, moisturize and protect your baby's bottom. Cornstarch powder can help prevent chafing and skin irritation as it absorbs moisture and acts as a silky lubricant, reducing friction by 60%.

Always ensure any remaining powder is cleaned from your baby's bottom each time the nappy is soiled and removed. After cleaning your baby, reapply the powder as required.

3. Change your baby's nappy frequently

Urine can irritate your baby's skin. You can help prevent irritation by changing your baby's nappy frequently and using nappy liners between nappy changes. Nappy liners channel and absorb wetness away from the skin. If your baby already has nappy rash, a powder or cream that contains zinc oxide will help his skin.

4. Avoid skin breakage

Where skin is broken, urine and feces can cause severe irritation and an infection may result. To protect your baby's skin, keep it clean and dry by using the most gentle baby products.

5. Avoid plastic pants

They tend to raise the humidity in the nappy area and therefore increase the potential as a breeding ground for bacteria

6. Avoid the use of strong soaps

Your baby's skin is delicate. Harsh products can cause irritation.

7. Make sure nappies are rinsed well

Rinsing is important, especially after using detergent, softening or antibacterial agents on nappy.

8. Continue treating

Continue treating your baby's nappy rash until all signs of the irritation have disappeared.
