When Soothing Techniques Fails

If despite your best efforts, your baby remains inconsolable, remember, this is no reflection on your ability as a parent. Some babies do cry a lot, about one in 10, and even the calmest baby has days when he just won't be comforted. If you have exhausted all your soothing techniques, and are feeling at your wits' end, try the following:

  • put him in the pram and go for a walk. Crying never seems as bad when you're outside, and the motion of the pram may well send him off to sleep. The fresh air will do you good too.

  • get help, try ringing one of the help lines listed at the phonebook, or just phone a friend for relative. Another adult's voice can really help calm you down when your baby's crying is getting to be too much.

  • If you can't get out of the house, and you can't stand any more, put him gently in his bassinet or cot, and leave the room for 10 minutes. Don't feel bad about doing this, you can't help your baby when you are tense, and, after a short break from his crying, you may well feel ready to try soothing him again. Don't leave him for longer than this, young babies should not be left to cry for long periods.

  • remember, this is a temporary phase and it really does get better, even though it may seem never ending at the time.

Soothing Equipment 1

Dummies

It is ultimately your choice whether you use a dummy or not. Consider though, that research Suggests that baby who suck on dummies may go off to sleep faster but wake up more often, and may wean from the breast slightly earlier. Getting rid of the dummy once your baby is older can also be difficult, though many breastfed babies who take a dummy initially, begin to refuse it after a week or two.

Soothing Equipment 2

Bouncinettes and rockers

If you have the kind of baby who seems to want to know what's going on at all times, a bouncinette or rocker can be a great help. They allow babies to get up off the floor and view the world from a more interesting angle and the rocking motion that many provide can also be very soothing. You should always supervise babies in bouncinette on a table or other raised surface.

Soothing Equipment 3

Toys

Really young baby is not easy to distract with rattles and other toys, but as they get older, brightly colored objects can often temporarily distract them from their tears. Cuddly toys usually do not begin to appeal until baby is into toddler hood, but mobiles hung over a change table or cot can be a great form of entertainment.

From around four to six months your baby will begin to play much more actively with rattles, passing them from hand to hand and giving them a good chew, as well
